marshalling picThis scheme enables students who have completed their law degree or common professional examinations but have not yet been called to the Bar or started articles or pupilage, to spend a day or days (up to two weeks) in Court with a Supreme Court Judge. The Bermuda Bar Association offers this opportunity to Bermudian law students in conjunction with the Supreme Court of Bermuda.

The Bar Association in Conjunction with the Chief Justice offer the scheme for a student who has completed his/her law degree and before they start a pupilage to shadow a Justices during Court sessions. The Marshalling Scheme was spearheaded into action several years ago by the then Chief Justice, Richard Ground and former Presidents of the Bar Association, Mrs. Robin Mayor (2005/6), Mr. Rod Attride-Stirling (2007/8) and Ms. Kiernan Bell (2009/10). Sir Richard Ground was an avid teacher who took the time to listen and provide guidance to law students and newly admitted members of the bar. Sir Richard Ground passed away on the 22nd of February 2014 after a short illness. This award has now been dedicated in his memory.

This scheme sees on average 2-4 participants a year to see the inner workings of the judicial system, policies & procedures assist the attendee in understanding the behind-the-scenes workings of the Courts. Since its inception in 2006, some 24 participants have moved through the scheme.

Participants are provided with the opportunity to meet local and international Attorneys, Barristers & visiting KC's. 'Students must have obtained a Law degree and attend the scheme before commencing a pupilage'. Bar Council are very grateful to The Hon. Chief Justice Mr. Larry Mussenden and the Registrar for accommodating our future attorneys.
